September Kicks Off With a Watch-Time Win for Football

Welcome to our weekly snapshot of TV by the numbers, highlighting the most-watched shows and networks for September 2-8, with insights from Inscape, the currency-grade smart TV ACR data provider and data technology division of Vizio. Data is linear, live TV only and includes all episode types (new and reruns). Rankings are by percent share duration (i.e., time spent watching).

The regular seasons for both NFL and college football are now officially underway, and viewers are eagerly tuning into the action. NFL games accounted for almost 8% of the week’s watch-time, with related programming including Football Night in America, NFL RedZone and The OT also making the top 25 ranking. College football was in second place with a 5.77% viewership share.

Some additional insights around the most-watched TV programming:

  • With football stealing the spotlight, MLB slips from second to third place week-over-week with 1.44% of minutes watched, and U.S. Open Tennis falls to No. 4 (1.28%).

  • Friends moves from No. 15 previously to No. 12, with its 0.53% viewership share driven by reruns on Nickelodeon and TBS.

  • Speaking of reruns, FBI jumps into the ranking at No. 24 (0.38% viewership share) thanks to a few weekday marathons on ION.

  • Fox News owns two of the other week-over-week ranking newcomers: Fox News Live lands at No. 18 after not being in the top 50 programs previously, while Hannity rises from No. 26 to No. 25.

NBC moves into first place on the TV network ranking, which you can see on The Measure.
