HBO’s Big Emmys Haul Supplants Netflix

Just a year after Netflix seemingly owned the Emmys, this year’s awards featured HBO — and HBO Max — returning to the top of the pile.

Thanks to big wins for Succession, The White Lotus and Euphoria (among other programs), the company collected 37 Creative Arts and Primetime Emmys combined – up from 19 last year, and more than Netflix’s 26 in a distant second in 2022.

As Deadline shows, the top two shows (The White Lotus and Euphoria) alone accounted for 16 of those, perhaps making an even more compelling case that HBO’s creative arm should be left alone in the ongoing Warner Bros. Discovery restructuring.

Though the horse race shows Netflix fell behind HBO year-over-year, the service was still No. 2 and well ahead of the nearest competitor (Hulu with eight wins). Additionally, Netflix’s wins during this year’s Emmys in part came from a surprising source: breakout 2021 hit Squid Game, which earned four Creative Arts nods and two Primetime victories.

Whether or not Netflix’s next chapter is successful may depend on how many more Squid Game equivalents it can churn out. While the series was a surprise, future programming standouts ultimately need to get a bit more predictable — for both the service and its subscribers, as well as advertisers when that tier arrives.
