Another Star-Studded Sports Week: TV By the Numbers

Here’s a snapshot of TV by the numbers for the week of Jan. 23-29, highlighting the most-watched shows and networks with data from Inscape, the currency-grade smart TV ACR data provider and data technology division of Vizio with insights from a panel of more than 20 million opted-in TVs. Data is linear, live TV only and includes all episode types (new and reruns). Rankings are by percent share duration (i.e., time spent watching).

The NFL Conference Championship games accounted for 7.31% of watch-time during the week, putting it squarely in first place in our program ranking.

Some additional insights about the top programming on TV:

  • Basketball continues to gain steam, with men’s college games capturing 1.73% of minutes watched, an increase from the previous week’s 1.51%. NBA dribbles up to third place with 1.48% of watch-time.

  • Fire Country, a procedural drama from CBS in the middle of its first season, makes its debut on the ranking at No. 10 with 0.57% of minutes watched.

  • PGA Tour Golf also jumps into the chart, landing at No. 11 with 0.56% share duration. It previously was not among the top 50 most-watched programs.

  • Additional week-over-week ranking newcomers include NBC Nightly News With Lester Holt, Chicago Fire and Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives

Thanks in part to the NFL AFC Championship game and Fire Country, CBS takes first place on the network ranking with 10.15% of watch-time, up from its second-place position the previous week (8.69%).

Additional insights around the most-watched networks from Jan. 23-29:

  • Thanks in part to Good Morning America, NBA games and ABC World News Tonight With David Muir, ABC moves up a spot to No. 3 with 6.16% of watch-time.

  • Reruns of Friends helped both TBS and Nickelodeon inch up one slot, with the former taking ninth place and the latter in eighteenth.

  • Even though they maintain their ranking positions week-over-week, Fox News Channel, Hallmark Channel and The CW had increases in watch-time: Fox News was up to 5.08% from 4.85% previously, while Hallmark captured 1.73% (up from 1.67%) and the CW accounted for 1.11% of minutes watched (up from 1.06%).

  • There was only one week-over-week ranking newcomer: Comedy Central, which lands at No. 24 with 0.88% of minutes watched. Reruns of The Office and Seinfeld accounted for most of the network’s watch-time.
