Golf Putts Into First Place For Recent Live TV Viewership

Welcome to our weekly snapshot of TV by the numbers, highlighting the most-watched shows and networks for April 3-9, with insights from Inscape, the currency-grade smart TV ACR data provider and data technology division of Vizio. Data is linear, live TV only and includes all episode types (new and reruns). Rankings are by percent share duration (i.e., time spent watching).

The 2023 Masters Tournament and related coverage scored over 4% of all watch-time during the week, placing it solidly in first place for the program ranking. (Check out this article for a more detailed breakdown of Masters viewership).  

Some additional insights about the top programming on TV:

  • Although it remains in fourth place, NBA games saw a week-over-week increase in watch-time, up to 0.97% from 0.95% as the regular season came to a close. 

  • The NCAA men’s basketball championship on April 3 scored 0.83% of minutes watched for the entire week, putting it in sixth place — not too shabby considering it was a single game. 

  • With Donald J. Trump’s arraignment in New York City on April 4, it’s no surprise that multiple news programs have week-over-week ranking increases, including Today, America Reports, America’s Newsroom, CBS Mornings, Tucker Carlson Tonight and Hannity

  • NHL hockey, which is wrapping up its regular season later this month, jumps into the ranking at No. 24 with 0.43% of watch-time for the week. 

Looking at networks, CBS retains its No. 1 position week-over-week, increasing its share of watch-time to 9.15% from 8.05% previously, thanks in part to the NCAA men’s basketball championship telecast and 2023 Masters coverage. 

Additional insights around the most-watched networks from April 3-9:

  • NBC takes second place, although it had a slight decrease in watch-time week-over-week, down to 6.39% from 6.63% previously. ABC, at No. 3, also saw a decrease, down to 6.18% from 7.07%.

  • For the second week in a row, both MSNBC and CNN increase ranking positions and share of minutes watched: MSNBC moves into seventh place from eighth previously with 2.27% of watch-time (up from 2.11%), while CNN lands at No. 9 with 1.93% (up from No. 11 and 1.69%).

  • The Golf Channel (No. 16, 1.21% share) and Bravo were the two week-over-week ranking newcomers (No. 25, 0.90%).
