2017 Golden Globes: Love Dominates Viewers’ Response Across Platforms

The 74th Golden Globe Awards, the star-studded affair hosted by Jimmy Fallon on NBC Sunday, generated all sorts of passion from viewers across platforms. Emotional responses were filled with craziness, congrats, a little comedy, and most of all, love. Canvs, the language analytics company, took a look at social media responses surrounding the awards ceremony to see what drove the most emotion in viewers.During the night, Canvs detected 819,182 Emotional Reactions (ERs) out of 2,335,007 tweets about the Golden Globes captured by Nielsen, with love ERs dominating at 43.8%. The biggest spike of this emotion came during the speech by Meryl Streep heard ‘round the world, who, despite losing her voice, put President-Elect Donald Trump on blast.

Another top ER during the night was crazy (8.7%), which also spiked surrounding Streep and her acceptance speech. Some viewers definitely had a difference in opinion.

Fans also expressed congratulations (12.9% of ERs), which spiked surrounding Donald Glover’s Atlanta winning Best TV Series — Comedy or Musical.

From a comedic standpoint, 2.9% of ERs fell into the funny bucket, with the most talked about moment coming from Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig.

But the biggest comedic moment, without a doubt, came from Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield, who were seen kissing as Ryan Gosling took the stage to accept his award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy.
