Since Netflix announced the premiere of Orange Is The New Black back in 2013, the show has transcended its autobiographical origin. Flash-forward five years, and the hit series has returned for a sixth season by popular demand, which had the Twittersphere rumbling.
In the days leading up to the July 27 premiere, Orange Is The New Black sparked nearly 8,000 Emotional Reactions (ERs), with more than 35% expressing excitement from fans who couldn’t wait for the latest season to go live, according to emotion measurement and artificial intelligence company Canvs.
The opening weekend did not disappoint, either. More than 102,000 tweets poured in about the show and 38% expressed some sort of emotion, with character Alex Vause (played by Laura Prepon) being the main driver (8.6%).
The show wasn’t just a hit for the streaming service, but it was dominant across all TV sets. Over the course of the last week (July 23-29), OITNB generated 42.8X as many ERs than the average program and 37.6X the love.
