Social Video’s Royal Interest

In the 12 days following the passing of the U.K.’s Queen Elizabeth II on Sept. 8, the monarch generated over 1.6 billion YouTube views ,according to data from Tubular Labs. That’s 1.4 billion more than views for Queen Elizabeth-related videos in the 12 days prior, as audiences sought out more content around her life, death and memorial.

  • There were nearly 61K videos uploaded about the Queen from Sept. 8-19 — versus 13.6K in the 12 days prior to her death.

  • The Queen’s passing was covered the world over, though no individual outlet generated more YouTube views than India’s CNN-News18, which had 92.4 million. Next was Sky News (64.2 million), The Royal Family Channel (48.6 million) and Guardian News (28.3 million), which are all U.K.-based.

  • However, the U.S. actually accounts for the largest share of views by creator country for Queen-related videos, at 29.7% (versus 27.4% for the U.K.).
